One of the greatest of all movie partnerships was that of director Akira Kurosawa and actor Toshiro Mifune, which started with "Drunken Angel" in 1948 and ended with "Red Beard" in 1965.
Although each had a professional life that stretched beyond their collaboration, they will be remembered more for the 16 films they made together than the ones they made apart.
So inextricably linked are they that author Stuart Galbraith IV has written a dual biography, "The Emperor and the Wolf: The Lives and Films of Akira Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune." The 823-page book exhaustively chronicles their artistic triumphs and stormy relationship with each other and the Japanese studios in the years after World War II. It will be published by Faber & Faber on Tuesday.
