There's an interesting essay entitled "Idealism, Protest, and The Tale of Genji: The Confucianism of Kumazawa Banzan (1619-91)" available on the Oxford University Press website - http://www.oup.co.uk/religion/

Its downloadable as a pdf file, about 90 pages worth, and throws some interesting insights on how Ieyasu and the Tokugawa state moulded the character of the samurai to fit the conditions of the time. I'm still a-readin and a-thinkin, but I'll post some pleasantly controversial stuff (I hope) when I've digested it all.

You can download it at : http://www.oup.co.uk/pdf/0-19-815251-5.pdf
