Dr. Lee Morin was in a Florida emergency room, trying to remove a bullet from a child's ear, when NASA called. His application had been approved and did he still want to be an astronaut?
That was 1996. Six years later, Morin has finally made it to space.
The 49-year-old Navy captain has a bachelor's degree in science, master's degrees in biochemistry and public health, and doctorates in medicine and microbiology. He's also a free-lance inventor and knows how to use a samurai sword, thanks to a former karate instructor. As a spacewalker on this mission, he has a torque wrench that he'll pull out of a sheath, samurai sword-style.
