Is anyone familiar with Dave Walmsley's Canadian Combato system and/or its videotapes? Recommend or not?

Thanks

Dave sent me his Basic Strikes video a few weeks ago to review it. I recommend it highly. He does a good job at showing the techniques in an easy to learn, non macho manner. As the son of A WW2 ranger/hand to Hand combat Instructor I can vouch that the methods he is showing are authentic.

Dave takes a lot of flak for being loyal to John Kary.

He is also pretty abrupt about his views, especially a distate for classical training. But I'm classical and we get along.

His basics tape is as good as any of the genre that I've seen.

As you can see personality conflicts abound in the WW2 comatives field. But I hope that Johnathan's question--about the contents of the tape--have been answered. As far as I am concerned the tape is showing valid techniques in a clear, consise manner. Which is the whole point of the original question, no?

For the most part, sure. But I think it's always worth considering the personality behind the product, to see if that's the sort of person you want to support.

Thanks everyone for the responses. The reason I asked was, while the product sounds good, the creator runs a forum where only HE can post. That always makes me wary because the best will subject themselves to the tests and scrutiny that an open forum represents. However, much of what he, Dave Walmsley, writes makes sense. Thanks again for the responses.

Dave can also be relatively unpleasant (http://pub104.ezboard.com/fclosecombat82274frm5.showMessage?topicID=55.topic) and his association (http://pub104.ezboard.com/fclosecombat82274frm5.showMessageRange?topicID=54.topic&start=1&stop=20) with The Hikuta Troll (http://pub95.ezboard.com/bhikutacombatsystems) didn't do much for me. A look through the older threads at James Sass' Close Combat (http://pub15.ezboard.com/bclosecombat82274) board will turn up much discussion of Dave, Mr. Kary, and American Combatives. (Apparently Mr. Kary's wife Marge (http://pub104.ezboard.com/fclosecombat82274frm1.showMessage?topicID=553.topic) sent some rather vicious hate-mail in the wake of a few of those exchanges, too.)

Is there a problem with John Kary? I saw the BB Mag article an American Combatives but I'm not otherwise familiar with either the man or his system. Comments?

Here is the problem--if you want to learn WW2 type combatives where do you go? Nearly all of the actual vets, like Charlie Nelson & Rex Applegate, are either gone or very old. The only option is to find someone who learned it second hand and is willing to teach or go to a commercial shool like Karey's who is actively teaching.
I trained alongside John at our old instructors school back in 1991 (who, btw, is doing a free seminar this summer.Check it out at www.gutterfighting.org) John knows his stuff. Buy one of his tapes and see if it's what you are looking for.

There was a thread on WW2 Combatives on blade forums where where there some very intesting information came out. If some one can find the thread in the archives at blade forums and knows how to make a link to E-Budo it would be usefull for this discussion.

Dave is a class act. His tapes are second to none and he is a gentleman to boot. I highly recommend his tapes!
