Gassho,

If you have a problem with regular size dogi, too small, tight or short, here is a good news. There are several licensed Shorinji Kempo product companies and I found out that 2 of them are accepting special orders.
One is Isami for its SK-90/95 types (SK-90 is, so called, "the best dogi" in Shorinji Kempo and SK-95 is the regular type).
The other is Toju for its "White" (Non-shrink)/ "Light brown" (Non-shrink/Original). This "Light Brown" is called, "Kinari (raw material)" and it is famous for lasting very long.
Since both cases are different each other in terms of the price and the way to order, let me explain them separately based on our experiences and information we have.
Please note that the cuff is expected to be just in between elbow and wrist for your jacket, and in between knee and ankle for your pants according to the dogi guideline of Shorinji Kempo. Incidentally, the guideline requires you to put your names on three locations on your dogi; back collar, lower collar, and front of pants. For the guideline, please take a look at San Francisco Branch web site at:

http://www.geocities.com/sfshorinji/Dogi_Guideline.pdf

< ISAMI's case >

1) The prices (without tax* and shipping cost in Japanese Yen )& days.

SK-90 - 30,000 JPY (about $240**) & about 4 weeks
SK-95 - 28,000 JPY (about $224) & about 4 weeks

*Japanese consumer tax is 5%
** $1= about 125 yen
***If you merely make it long at one part of Isami regular dogi No.7 (sleeves, pants length, or etc.), the price is multiply the regular price by 1.5. Incidentally, No.7 dogi is for 185 cm (6'2) or above. In this case, the prices are as follows:
SK-90 - 18,000 JPY (about $144)
SK-95 - 15,750 JPY (about $126)

2) Shipping cost & days

Here is an example for Isami's case. Please note that the weight is 2kg (about 5lb, almost one pair of dogi and a shipping box) in these examples, so it might cost less than them in a real case.

EMS (Express Mail Servies) - 4000 yen (about $32) & about 1 week
SAL (Sky And Land) - 3850 yen (about $31) & about 2 weeks
Sea Mail - 2350 yen (about $19) & about 6 weeks

3) Way to order

Isami requires thirteen locations' figures. Please see the attachment for the details.

4) Payment

You can use your credit card, VISA or Master. Please see the attachment also.

< TOJU's case>

1) The prices (without tax and shipping cost) & days.

White (Non-shrink) - 11,000 JPY (about $88) & about 2 weeks
Light Brown (Non-shrink) - 11,000 JPY (about $88) & about 2 weeks
Light Brown (Original) - 10,000 JPY (about $80) & about 2 weeks

2) Shipping cost

In our case, kenshi picked up the product in Japan, so we don't know how much the cost will be. But I think you can expect almost the same amount as in Isami's case above.

3) Way to order

Toju also requires eleven locations' figures. See the attachment for the details.

4) Payment

You transfer the cost to Toju's account of one of these banks/post office. Incidentally, the full name of Toju is "Tokyo Judoi Kogyo."

Japanese Postal Services: 00150-9-45741
Mitsui-Sumitomo-Bank - Shinjukudoori Branch: 1021971
Yachiyo-Bank - Yoyogi Branch: 41696

5) Contact

<Summary>
As you see, Isami and Toju have good side and bad side each other. In Isami's case, you can make an order by e-mail and pay by credit card. But it is not cheap and takes longer to receive the product. On the contrary, in Toju's case, you need less money and time to get the product. But you cannot use e-mail and credit card, so you have to process everything by fax and transfer money to Japan by yourself.
Simply, my personal recommendation is as follows: If you want to get a perfect dogi, choose Isami's SK-90. If you merely need a proper size dogi, choose Toju.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. I am happy to help you to practice Shorinji Kempo in a proper size dogi. Thank you.

Gassho.
Hi Jun.
Thanks for posting this here. Your posts are always very informative and I hope you can find time to post here more often.

As for the link I think that you need to be a member of that e-mail group to be able to see the posts and download the documents.

As for attaching files the problem is that ".doc" are not a valid extension. (The valid file extensions for attachments are: gif jpg png txt zip bmp jpeg)

I will save your documents as txt-files and attach them:

Here is the second file for Toju.

Please also note that these files are in Unicode and you need to set the font in your notepad-program to be a Japanese font in order to se the kanji.

If anyone has problems let me know and I see if I can put it as pdf-files on our website.

/Anders

Thank you for your help, Pettersson-sensei. Since I didn't know how to attach my files properly, I am glad to see that you already made it.

Speaking of the Japanese language, I am still not sure what is the best way to make such attachments. If you have a good idea, please let me know. Thank you.

PS. Thank you for your request of my frequent visits to this forum. I will try to sign in here more often. Thanks again.

Gassho.

Hi Omi-san.
No problem for helping out.
Actually the easiest way is maybe to type it out in the post, anybody that can read Japanese text in a Word document can read Japanese in their web browser.
One should not do what I did, sometimes I am just stupid and don't think. :o
I realised that the pictures are not included in the txt-files and they are necessary to understand were to do the measurements.

So clear up my mistake I post the whole text and pictures as well.
Here is the Isami:

Gassho.
Just a word of warning: Isami currently has a backlog that will take up to three weeks to embroider your name on your dogi before delivery. Take this into consideration if planning a purchase for a special occasion, such as a forthcoming demonstration.

I am happy to report that my new Isami dogi (SK-95) has arrived. It was ordered around the last week of July and took one month for them to ship the order. Because of my size and stature, I had to have it custom made. The fit is somewhat large which concerns me because I want to loose weight but I could have it tailoed. The material quality is excellent but they were way too generous with the starch because it is very stiff. I've already washed it 2 times after weaing it only once to see if I can loosen it up a bit but still nothing. I am going to have to use some kind of softner. By the way, it does not shrink that much.

In either case I am very happy with whipping sounds it makes whenever I strike. :)
