I've been looking for a boken with a long tsuka, like the ones shown on the Bugei site. Does anyone know where I might find one?

Maybe it's just me, but $69 seems a bit much for a boken...

You might ask Kim Taylor up in Guelph. He not only sells them, he makes them. His email is kataylor@uoguelph.ca. He can also be found on the Iaido-L and at http://ejmas.com .

I can't give you the information about them you need as I don't use bokken, but the one I saw and held was awfully nice. If he can't help you he certainly can direct you to the right place.

Hi Oliver.
The main problem you will get with Bokken (and costs of..) is that you will get exactly what you pay for in most cases.
You can easily find very cheap Bokken in your local Martial arts shop but the quality of wood, design, and overall toughess of the cheaper kind will be lower than the more expensive types offered by Bugei.com.
Other good sites for high quality Bokken are Mr. Taylor's (See above post). Or try;
-Bujin design at www.bujindesign.com
-Nishijin in Kyoto at www.japanesesword.net
-Or try Nosyuiaido at www.nosyuiaido.com
But essentially all these sites offer very good quality and reliable Bokken that will last you for a time if you look after the wood well.
If you want to pay less then any old MA store online and off will suit you well. And you may of course find a cheap, and reliable dealer here but with the companies mentioned above at least you can be sure that the cost reflects the work put in when designing and making the Bokuto for you.
Also some of the posters here offer excellent blades at relatively inexpensive prices and it is worth the time doing a search here to find their sites....Mark Brecht is one of the more obvious.
HTH anyway.

Oi!!
Mr. Elo....Less of the "old" please!;) Last time I was asked I was 23 years...And we live longer these days anyway! (That is unless you run into a 'dispute' with those darn pesky 'Neo Ninja' types...that can age you considerably!).
The 'wise' however, I can live with. Thanks.:smilejapa

Another place is KingFisher Woodworks (http://www.kingfisherwoodworks.com). I purchased from them and have been very happy with the quality of work. The individual that I spoke with very nice and helpful.
