Hi all,
I have been lurking in the forum for a while and want to get the input of people here.

I am a teacher at a high school and have convinced our administration to offer a "martial-arts" class for a trimester. This came about because my sensei actually works at the school as a drug and anger management counsellor. He actually runs his anger management classes (which are pull-outs) very similar to a dojo class. So, we thought, why not pull in more students, go every day and offer it as a credit bearing class. The credit btw is "performing art" as I am certified in science not PE :(, even though a shodan.

So we will be on the mats 3 days a week with my sensei and just me in the classroom for 2 days a week. The help I need is what to be doing in those 2 days (12 week, 24 in all).

Ideas I have had:

Watch films (any ideas?)
Watch themselves perform Kata (taped from matwork)
Discussion
Research about MA

Bear in mind the students are, er, challenging to say the least. Periods are 70 minutes. We will study aikido, judo, jujitsu and goju-Ryu.

Thanks,
Barrie North

Based on the arts you are going to be teaching, why not call it Japanese Martial arts and teach classes on Japanese culture, language and traditions?

For research ideas, consider sending students to http://ejmas.com for a few days. I think that there is probably sufficient MA-related material to keep most people reading for several days, and probably longer if you also point them to the KRONOS bibliographies and "Other Online Resources." This in turn could lead to reviews, analysis of online sources, and assorted writing projects.

Thanks guys

Part of the idea is to use the ideas and philosophy of Budo to think about conflict resolution. Although we will be talking about some culture differences I don't think I would be well equipped to go into much detail...

keep most people reading for several days

ahhh, reading , if only I was so lucky! Half of these kids are taking the class as anger management, they are not exactly, er, stellar students :D.

Try Verbal Judo. http://www.verbaljudo.com/ . The principles apply.

As for the reading, you'd be surprised what kids read, if they believe that the material is relevant. See, for example, "Wrestling 101" by Evan Ginzburg, a NYC junior high school teacher who offers a professional wrestling appreciation course.
