Dear all,

My girlfriend wants to buy a new computer while we are here in Japan.

She does not read OR speak Japanese, not even katakana or hiragana.

I have only worked on Japanese Win XP a few times.

Can you change its language functions?

Any advice?

Should I partition its hard drive and slap in an American Win XP or Win 98 SE?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Jody.

You will need to partition and either boot up English or Japanese OS.
Not sure if you know how to create a bootup menu for your PC.

I run Japanese OS with English Software slapped on top of it. Works well.

Other Option is to pick up a newspaper like the "Japan Times" on Mondays and check for ads of Companies that build English/Bilingual PC's over here.

Will cost more than a Japanese setup though I think.

If you want to retain Japanese Language capabilities either go Japanese OS or Bilingual PC.

Hope this helps.

P.S.: Ditch Win XP, get Win2000.

DOS menu?

Thanks Red for replying! I was hoping you would!:D

My girl wants to buy a computer here in Japan (now do I after I have seen those Dell Japan ads!).

Is there no way she can make a quick conversion?
How do I get to the DOS menu? BIOS menu?

Can I slap in hardware I buy here into my American made system (I shipped over my American system I made myself)?
Video card? Cable hookup?

I messed up my OS by installing a Japanese AOL free CD. My Win 98 took all the button titles and network titles and TRIED to relabel them into Japanese characters but couldn't do the font for the most part! Now I have to reload Win 98 again!

Thanks again Red--Jody

Hi Jody.

Let me look through my Note on how to set up the Boot menu.
Yes, it is close to BIOS level.
Haven't done so in a long time.

Your US Hardware should work ok.

Partitioning the Drive and doing 2 Full setups is a pain, hence I didn't do it.
Plus, the hassles of finding the English Software in Japan.

The Only OS I know of where you can change languages quickly is OS X (Macintosh).
There you can change it bassically on the fly.

Speak to you soon.
