I live in a first floor apartment and I want to construct a free-standing makiwara that can be used without disturbing the tenants above me (by shaking the structure). I don't have space to dig a hole and drop a plank into the ground either. Has anyone had this same problem and overcome it? Thanks in advance for the sugestions. :D

One of my instructors had a makiwara board that he used in his house.
He made a small section of wooden floor that sat on a couple of 2x4's. It was just large enough to be able to perfoem stances and throw a punch. He then attached the Makiwara board to the end using some type of steel bracket.
I think the actual stand that the makiwara board was on was a peice of wood that had been cut diagonally down the center to give it a little play when punching.
The weight from your body standing on the attached floor kept it from moving. It was also a very thick and heavy wooden floor that took 2-3 people to move anyway.
Not sure if this helps but maybe it will give you an idea on constructing your own design.
