I know this is a VERY long shot, but does anyone know of any shakuhachi teachers in Sydney, Australia?

Hello,

You might want to try Riley Lee, a founding member of Taikoz (click here (http://www.taikoz.com)) and Australia's only grandmaster of the shakuhachi (dai shihan). I don't know if he is currently in the country, as Taikoz is performing in Bangkok.

Mr Lee has many fine students, one of which performed at the launch of the new book "Across the Nightingale Floor" in May.

Taikoz practices in Glebe, close to the Sydney Fish Markets.

Send them an E-mail and ask if Mr Lee is accepting new students - as with any Japanese tradition you must be committed and determined and I know that Mr Lee is very strict and harsh, the best shakuhachi teacher outside of Japan I'm told.

Wow, many thanks John, I wasn't even expecting a reply, let alone the one that you gave me, much appreciated.

Try the Shakuhachi Flute Resource Page (http://www.shakuhachi.com/) and click "Teachers & Organizations" in the Sidebar. Scroll down the page to "Australia;" some of the entries have e-mail links.

HTH,
