Dear all,

I just read this:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2002-10-17-nkorea-nukes_x.htm

WIll this mean a militarized Japan?
More American military bases in Japan?
WIll Japan just backdown again like they did in China and in North Korea?

I think this might be the reason why we have been hearing more calls to change Japan's constitution...

Thoughts?

I hope they will stop with all this racchi mondai stuff and get back to what was at the top of the list back in September: missiles.

Koizumi stated that he would "...seek a sincere response from North Korea to eliminate any doubts about any nuclear program it may have." He also went on to say that these issues must be "resolved with the cooperation of North Korea and the United States." (Daily Yomiuri, Friday Oct. 18th 2002

Koizumi's job just got more serious.

But I think we may be seeing a change in N. Korean policy. After the "axis of evil" statement NK has rushed (ie been scared) into the international scene, trying to establish itself on the "right" side of the fence. They admitted to the abductions, and pushed for more normalization talks with Japan. They opened (or are trying to) an experimental market economy sector bordering China. And now they admit to a N-program. It seems they are breaking the old habits of being confronted with evidence, and denying all. How far they will come is anybody's guess, but I would hope that the nuke issue would top the agenda of future discussions between Koizumi and Kim.

BTW lol at "Glow"

I feel a bit ignorant, but does Japan have Nukes? Also, this must be one of the few times Korea is a viable threat to Japan?

Japan claims to have no nukes. However, they no doubt have the technology to whip one up real quick. They have nuclear power and ICBM capable rockets.....
They also have some of the most advanced subs in the world.

I'll bet Korea would love to take over Japan as a little payback for the 45 years of torture they enured.

Japan would be stupid NOT to make a few nukes just in case.

I forsee a HUGE constitution change in Japan's future.

Constitutional changes are not all that easy, Jody. Given the Japanese Diet's inertia, they'd end up amending the constitution to allow for the manufacture of nukes after North Korea has dropped a few choice ones, and Tokyo is nothing but radioactive ash.

Dear Kimpatsu,

Haven't the Japanese had the same party in power for the last 50 years?

LDP? They aren't liberal and from I hear, they aren't democratic.

I feel history in the air, like the calm before the storm...

BTW could somebody explain to me how the hell Israel got nukes?

If Israel bought them, why not Japan or some other pissed off country!

Japan to urge Pyongyang to stop nuclear program

Japan will urge North Korea to give up its nuclear development program during diplomatic normalization talks, officials said Thursday.

Soon after the U.S. State Department announced Wednesday that North Korea has told a U.S. envoy that it has a secret nuclear weapons program, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi responded.

"I hope North Korea will take a sincere stance to dispel suspicions over its nuclear project," Koizumi said Thursday. "We need careful consultation with the U.S. because Japan alone cannot handle these serious issues such as the development of nuclear weapons."

Echoing Koizumi's comments, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda said that Japan would press Pyongyang to stop developing nuclear weapons during normalization talks set to begin on Oct. 29.

North Korean officials reportedly told James Kelly, assistant secretary of state for East Asia and Pacific Affairs, that Pyongyang had a program to enrich uranium for nuclear weapons when he visited the reclusive country in early October. The officials went so far as to say that they were no longer bound by a 1994 agreement with the U.S. under which North Korea was to cease any nuclear weapons development programs, U.S. officials said in Washington.

Taking seriously Pyongyang's declaration that it considered the non-nuclear accord nullified, Fukuda suggested that the normalization talks between Tokyo and Pyongyang might face an obstacle.

"If North Korea clearly violates the agreement with the U.S., apparently no progress will be made toward a normalization of diplomatic ties (between Tokyo and Pyongyang)," he said.

The U.S. officials added that Kelly and Undersecretary of State John Bolton have been dispatched to Beijing, Seoul and Tokyo for talks with high officials in the three countries.

The North's admission of the uranium enrichment program was made just weeks after North Korean leader Kim Jong Il told visiting Prime Minister Koizumi on Sept. 17 that his country abducted Japanese people to train their spies in Japanese.

In Seoul, diplomatic sources said that Pyongyang had to admit to the abductions and the nuclear weapons program in an apparent attempt to appease both Japan and the United States.

This is because the North Korean leadership believes the country's disastrous economy would improve only if it normalizes relationships with Tokyo and Washington.

But Pyongyang apparently miscalculated because the revelation of the abduction issue only raised the ire of the Japanese public and the U.S. is taking a tough stance against the North's nuclear program, the sources said. (Mainichi Shimbun, Oct. 17, 2002)

One last thing, 7 years ago I taught at the Japanese National Fusion Research Facility. Japan might not have nuclear weapons, but they sure have the parts for them.

18th October 2002, 08:26
Like I said they could slap one together real quick.......of course they would have to have several 1,000 meetings to decide and by the time they finished their kids would have graduated from Kim Jung Il University.;)

The LDP has been in power for around 50 years. There was a 2 year stint in the 70s where another party had the cup, but it was a minority rule and soon swung back to the LDP.

For who has what check here (http://asia.cnn.com/SPECIALS/cold.war/experience/the.bomb/deployment/).

It was estimated earlier this year that Japan could whip up a nuke in less than a year on their own.

...raised the ire of the Japanese public and the U.S. is taking a tough stance against the North's nuclear program.

Be careful. They are looking to open up. The US stated that NK is not Iraq, and they scrapped their two theater war capability which is good news for N.Korea. This has to be handled with kid gloves or the hermit kingdom will turn their back again...

CKohalyk

Also Jody, as for constitutional changes, the debate has been going on for awhile. I don't think they will go nuclear (remember Fukuda's "statement" earlier this year? That raised some ire...), but as far as JSDF capabilities, we may see some expansion in the next few years. This is one of the large topics NIDS (National Institute of Defence Studies) has been tackling recently.

Okay, I really have to ask

The statements that politicians make that "Raise some ire".

We all live here. Has anyone actually ever seen "Ire" being raised?

I've seen irate people fighting over a Luis Vitton bag, but I've never seen a rally in central Tokyo for anything other than boy band tickets.

I went to a couple then stopped because they were a waste of my time. I used to go and play basket ball, kendo, or judo with the students.........it was either that or fall asleep at my desk. They didn't have Internet access in schools when I was a teacher.

So have you figured out which teachers are shaggin' each other?.........or which ones are shaggin' students?

I'm oversimplifying matters, but essentially:

The French got their technology from us through both overt and covert means. The French sold it to Israel. However, Israel couldn't overtly test their nukes, and their delivery systems. But, when the French tested theirs, out at sea, they essentially gave all the data to the Israelis. Also, the Israelis had their representatives at the testing site anyway. Regarding all the conspiracy theories surrounding this (i.e., we sold it to the French knowing the Israelis would get the info, ect.), I'll leave that to the "experts".

As Robert points out, that could have been one of any of several people. Getting involved in scandals is how Japanese politicians let their constituents know that they still exists. Then the other politicians jump around and scream and feel glad no one has noticed they have 9 secretaries, and only one of them is paid... Ire in this case is just another case of Japanese bullying methodology in action. They couldnt really care less what was said, just that it is considered "wrong" so they get to give someone ¤¤¤¤ about it.

I hold to my original premise that the average japanese outside the press (mainly the foreign press at the) could not care a whit what the government does.

Average conversations remain centered on brand names and the latest 109 fashion. Japanese may as well not have a goverment.

Okay, I thought about it, and since I have been here, I can say that I have found public activism in a few cases, so perhaps Japanese are a bit more active than I thought.

1. The Freeway Toll protesters. (Not only are they protesting, but they are saving money too.)
2. The ID register.
3. North Korean kidnap victims
(As opposed to the North Koreans being manhandled by the chinese cops at the japanese consulate. I recall one of the Japanese was even nice enough to hand the policeman his hat back after he lost applying a choke on the N. Korean woman...)
4. The kitten Killer (He killed something cute. That's going too far! Actually, I can't say anything, since San Francisco managed to put up a 100K reward for the capture of the killer of Leo the Dog. Which was more than the reward for all 3 missing children combined.)
5. Tama Chan (Okay, the last one was not a protest, but a heck of a lot of people showed up.)

Mekugi (and all),

As illustrated in an earlier post of mine, I agree with your healthy relationship statement. I think they are genuinely trying to come out of their shell (see Mekugi's examples, and today's news about NK looking for talks with the US).

As per the "healthiness" of the relationship, well... At least they will survive, which is healthy I guess.

Regarding your Red Scare comment, I think we could make that a whole new thread ;)

Dear Rob,

Funny you should mention the shagging thing...

I have noticed some wierd relationships here with the teachers AND the students. Some of the PE instructors (especially one of the judo coaches) are just a little too touchy, homoerotic, and sadistical.

I have seen some wierd things: the old judo coach using a shinai on a student in an inappropriate place, teachers getting wierd 1 on 1 time with students in private, special parties for the different teaching clicks etc etc.

Has anyone else seen similar things?

Jody,

As you may have noticed Japan is obsessed with toilet humor, pooh pictures, and anything anal.
I am surprised Japan Inc. has corned the market on KY..............
So the Judo coach having a "poke" at one of the students rectums is no surprise.

When I taught at a private school one of the teachers was making small talk and asked me after the first month if I had "picked one". "Picked one what?" I said. He said: "Picked out a student to date."
Another teacher at the same school was the badminton coach and married one of the players 3 weeks after her graduation!
After a little investigative work I found that every single male teacher at that school had married an ex-student.............even the Richicho............the gym teacher had married one divorced her some years later and gotten a newer model.
I had several female students grab my crotch during class and offer to "relieve me".
On one of our mandatory teacher's onsen trips the female gym coach sat next to me whilst I belted out "Anarchy in the UK"..........afterwards she slid me her room key. Funny thing is I thought she was a donut bumping dyke!
