Hello Everybody!
My name is Darnell Townsend, I am 16 years old and I live on the South Side of Chicago. I was wondering if anybody here could help me out and let me know where is a good place to learn Japanese Sword Arts in the Chicago area. I am willing to travel relatively far if i have to, and I havent been able to find anything in the phone books, so i figured maybe somebody here would know of either a good dojo or a skilled practicioner in the Chicago area that i could train with! Thanks alot in advance for all of your help!,

There is a great kendo and iaido club which meets most every evening at the Midwest Buddahist Temple on the north side. That's about your best bet in Chicago! Great teachers and good kendo. Lots of different ages, too. I just saw them demonstrate last weekend at the Osaka Festival in Jackson Park, over behind the Museum of Science and Industry.

Send me an e-mail and I'll see if I can't get you in touch with somebody from there. Otherwise, you might just drop in on a week night and observe a class or two. I'm in Aurora, so I can also give you some contacts in the suburbs.

I think Don is describing the Chicago Kendo Club, which has been in Chicago since 1964 and whose leaders include Mr. Frank Matsumoto (7-dan) and Mr. George K. Izui (7-dan). Both are Nisei who began kendo during the 1930s. The URL is http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/3080/index.html .

There is also a Choyokan Kendo Dojo in Chicago. The URL is http://www.choyokan-kendo.org . I don't know anybody there but assume unless told otherwise that its members are also technically competent kendoka and all-round nice guys.

Finally, don't forget the Midwest kendo newsletter "Sempo." The URL is http://hometown.aol.com/tokawara/sempo/sempo.htm

The Choyokan people are a good group, as are the Buddhist Temple kendoka.I have had the opportunity to train with members of both dojos, and I would definitely recommend them both!

hey, that's pretty cool. i haven't yet had a chance to look into the schools up there, but it's been on my mind lately because this december i'm moving to the lower east side (i live in maryland at the moment - long story). i've been a bit concerned about finding people to train with when i get up there, but i guess i don't have to worry about it so much now.
glad i came across this post. =-)
