Every time I try to go running/jogging my left knee hurts. Right above the knee cap, especially when going up stairs. So I think I'll skip the running, but it has me a little worried. It seems fine otherwise, but I get the sense if I'm not careful it could become a bad knee. I was thinking of getting a knee support/compression wrap to wear while training, sort of as a preventitive measure. Can anyone recommend a particular one?

I don't want something that cuts into the back of the knee when the leg is bent, as in seiza. I'd also prefer something that wouldn't interfere with flexability too much.. ie metal lateral supports are probably bad, I'm thinking.

I think the smartest thing to do is go get some professional medical advise first, maybe let them take some pictures of the knee..

Mind you, a knee support is not always the best solution, sometimes doing special excercises will be better for the knee.. (and other parts of the body)

If it is suggested that you get some..... I use the neoprene (wet suit) type. They warm the joint and dont pinch at the back.

I wear them mostly to prevent injuries.

if you do want to wear one, the neoprene are the best!

If you have problems with it slowly moving up or down, first wet your hands and rub them on the inside of the support, this will make it a bit moist and will prevent it from moving around...

Hi All,

I have a knee injury, myself...

I find nothing works for me as well as an ol' fashioned ACE bandage wrapped real tight. ;)

I have a torn miniscus on my left knee. Tried neoprine..... NG for me.

You should definitely see a medical professional before doing anything yourself. You could be developing patello/femoral syndrome, which is sometimes called "runners knee." If you get any x-rays, be sure that they take a "sunrise" or "skyline" view, as this is the one that will show whether there is PFS.

Whenever I jog or do leg extensions I can hear an audible clicking noise. I haven't experienced pain since the day I injured it. I was a student of a "Korean Karate" school. For those who don't know, that is Moo Duk Kwan Tae Kwon Do, note the spacing in Tae Kwon Do. This is considered "traditional style" Tae Kwon Do where we practice things such as strict forms, emphasize stances and punches much more than WTF style Taekwondo. It was during a brutal class where deep stances were really being emphasized that I injured my knees. After that practice, my knees were literally "burning", that is the only word I can think of that describes it. Well after class was over, I had this sensation. Shortly thereafter I noticed the symptoms I described. I think I tore my meniscus; what do ya'll think?:(

Speaking as a Physical Therapist, if you have a painful knee whilst jogging support is almost definitely NOT the answer.

See a Physical Therapist who specialises in sports injuries or dance.
Common treatments are:

re-education of quadriceps (front of thigh) muscles as sometimes these are out of balance with each other

strapping of the kneecap during exercise plus re-ed exs of quads

acupuncture

Knee supports tend to weaken knee musculature and restrict the circulation to the joint. Also if it is "joggers knee" this is caused by a riughening of the back of the kneecap. Knee supports tend to compress the kneecap and so often compound the problem.
