Is anyone familiar with Azato Ankoh's student Ogosoku Chogo? I was under the impression that Funakoshi was Azato's only student, but as I was rereading Richard Kim's book, "The Weaponless Warriors" I noticed his name in the chart on page 48. Did Ogosoku have any students or did he become a student of another master? Did he and Funakoshi train together? Was he a blood relative of Azato?

It seems that Funakoshi's karate was mostly Matsumura/Ituso-style with some sword aspects thrown in (maybe Azato's Matsumura-Karate/Jigen-ryu-Kenjutsu influence). I am very interested in knowing whether there is a lineage that is Azato-style without as much Itosu influence.

Thanks,

Geoff Wingard

Isn't "Ogosoku" another rendering of Oshiro? So, "Ogosoku Chogo" would be Oshiro Chojo?

If my memory serves correct , I believe Yoshitaka Funakoshi trained and studied under Chogo Oshiro.

For Azato 's karate style influnce, check 'Shobukan.'

Also Shorinji Ryu Kenkokan claims Azato lineage and the hip usage looks like it may have some.
