I have become interested in the implementation of smaller weapons in various techniques armed and unarmed. In particular I've taken to the kogai. I know it was used to identify heads taken in battle and stuck in the heels to identify bodies for the same purpose. I'm also aware that they were used for bleeding horses as well.

Looking at the design, they would make nasty little weapons. It would be ubsurd to think that they were not used as weapons by resourceful samurai. I was wondering if anyone has heard of any specific techniques dealing with the kogai or even kozuka as a weapon. Should something have happened to the samurais tanto, he still had his kozuka. It may not have been as sharp as a tanto, but may well have saved a life or two on the battlefield.
