I hope some people don't find this thread depressing, but I was wondering who is the youngest user and oldest user?

I am talking about people that use and post on the site regularly.

I think I am one of the youngest being only 19. It would be cool if some one was a lot younger! Also I think some people are quite 'Mature' but I am not saying any names due to this IS an martial arts forum :D

Look like 40 years old ...

Almost 50 years old ...

I feel like 80 years old ....

As time goes by I will think like 20 years old because it was the best of times, and the worst of times to be Young, Dumb, and full of Fun!

Yeah, there are many people over 40 years old who don't post their age in their user cp.

But then again, maybe we should use five year blocks so that birthdays can not be stolen as part of identification fraud? Then everyone can post their approximate age ... Hint, hint.

I didn't become a serious computer user until 1984. It was a Mac 512, which was about as powerful a machine as anyone had seen in those days. About a year later, the Army began introducing LINUX-based databases at unit level. A pain to program, but they worked pretty well.

I could ask does anyone [besides Dan] remember Flathead Fords, or Rocket 88 Olds or a J-2 with a 6 pack, and don't believe that stuff about "this is not your father's Oldsmobile." Or what an Arden Engine was and where it became popular

Hey Bobar I dont remember posing with you - seriously - nice touch - got a few famous personality shots myself - it's fun to see the reaction on the faces of others - however, his Russian tinged with a Scot's brogue in "Red October" was a bit of a stretch.

As for me - 4 months old when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, and when my Uncle came home [he was at Scofield when they hit] the pictures of Hawaii before the war and compared to what it looks like today are incredible........... yes I'll be 62 in August........ and still having fun.......

As for computers- remember Pong? or the ad by Volvo in 72 when they touted their car as being the first in America with 2 brains - one was the driver and the second with their Electronic Brain that controlled the fuel injected engine [they didn't tell you that the Germans designed it]

Don't remember 'em first time around - but one of my biggest desires right now (if I ever get a garage) is to build myself something containing a flathead - preferably a '32, but anything early and ford would do. Flat-black, chopped & channelled and rolling on red steelies with skinny whitewall crossplies. And a mexican blanket seatcover, oh yes. (Where's the "drool" smilie).

There's a dragrace series over here called 'flathead meltdown' - the rules are basically a) a sidevalve engine and b)street legal and registered. I think some of those guys are approching the mid 13s. Certainly plenty of 14 second cars rolling around.

Now forgive me but :D a 79 Dodge Lil Red Express is parked in my yard along side a 66 Chevy II and a 69 Gia that's waiting for my son and I to finish assembling the Porsche Engine. The Chevy II is a straight 6 stick shift, but I've toyed about putting a 292 straight 6 with 283 pistons and a 239 head in it. Some years back I used to run it with 2 single barrel carbs and used to blow the doors off the yuppies with their Jeeps - [commuted to work with it for 5 years and had some fun while putting the kids through college with the cash saved from not making car payments]

Once had a 58 Ford wagon with a 312 Merc engine with ECZG valves [the size of silver dollars and since I never could find a P&G valve gap tool so they clacked a bit] coupled to a 3 speed Borg warner T-85 on the floor w/Overdrive wired to a toggle switch that let me use the O/D in all gears something akin to a 6 speed. Damned thing weighed 4000 pounds but when it was dropped into Overdrive I could hit 130+ with it, and the kids with their Mustangs never wanted to race "top end" for the pink slip, they knew how fast it was on the highway. It was a tank but I loved it......

When my two sons were in HS they asked to use the Lil Red. I later learned that some guys were hassling them about it being all show and no go........ and that my kids not only shut them down at the light outside the coffee shop, but left 100 feet of rubber in the process....... seems that apples raise apples.........

But the son that doesn't live at home anymore is now a yuppie and today wouldn't think to let me drive his car. But his wife caught him one day doing donuts in the snow with her 4x4 German car - she had a fit....... seems he's a kid just like his ol man.........

It's such a slow car but a family friend is quite ill and can no longer drive, He has had the car since 1975. He washes it every sunday and keeps amazing good care of it.

My Dad said that i was learning to drive and said that i could have it off him for £200! Nothing wrong with it, new tax disk, new tyres and super low milage. Only drives down the road to work in it.

My mate know i am a bit strange and some drive around in there small hatchback with alloy wheels, i think it would be more me to have a really silly car!

That's not the exact one but pretty much the same if not my shiny!

It's got the tinyest bit (about 1mm) of rust on one of the wheel arces but i think for a 30 year old car that's not bad!

Only thing it that it has not got a radio, so i am going to have to be carful about installing one, I am still not quite sure how to do it.

It IS a V8 AUTO! ^_____________^

Only thing i am worried about is the insurance being a new driver, and if i can't have it i've got a feeling buy brother will take it over.

I have never seen one before but he always drives it quite slow, being his baby and all. I have never seen what it can do...

I was thinking about not doing anything but alot is not original in the crome and the seats have been replaced before, also stuff that needs to be changed e.g exhast and tyres, but all the engine is still there and body work is original.

I want a car where i can jump across the bonnet to get in it!

I think we do not need to find out the age of people on e-budo. I am 32 and already a senior member.

It's like the joke from Jack Dee:

I do not like calling old aged pensioners OAP's as you seem to tell them in three words what they already.

As soon as they hit 65 they are whisked off to Bournmouth. A bus pulls up and they are taken away and left there. It's full of OAP homes.

And Bournmouth is full of hills. Come winter they slip and slide straight into the sea.

Is that a 2.0 liter six cylinder monster with fuel injection is is the intake system a knock off of a ZF Stromberg or SU carberator system? Never ran into a Datsun [nee Nissan - and the name change story is an interesting one] that didn't have major electrical bugs after it was more than 5 years old. Nothing but aggrievation trying to troubleshoot their systems. Could recite a long string of horror stories about their approach to solving cold start emissions, ignition timing, lean fuel concepts, etc. etc.

Never could get endeared to the Japanese cars, primarily because even now I feel that they're knock offs of other peoples work and design. But then I was spoiled by being a teacher for the Swedes, and later for the Germans [read M-B before they became totally sales oriented]

Love the cars, but I'll give you one word of advice - they are still primarily intended to get you from Point A to Point B and back again. The family comes first!

And everybody on this forum should stop doing the "you're too young to remember..." and "I think you're too young to understand", because I could easily stop it by pretending to be 26. :D

by the time I reach the age of thirty-four, it's such a shame
that I had to be thirty to start this particular path, but I
imagine that since other parts of my training took precedence
the training I recieve takes precedence of all the training
I missed while the training I missed would have been irellevant

OOOH it was better than that, cassette decks that allowed you to play games which if it went wrong, you ended up kicking the sodding thing into the nearest wall.

And like all computers, even today, the mandatory kicking is called a reboot (hence the name :D )

...and, yeah, we used punch cards, and FORTRAN.....

Whining little crybabies ...

by the time I was 21, in 1974, I had already served my time in the military, was in community college, working full tme, and getting my brothers and sisters off of the welfare system.

Weren't no time for playing with cars, or computers, only thing there was time for was a six pack, and the bar scene on friday/ saturday night.

Space invaders was the new bar game, and there was still pool tables, dart boards, and pin ball games.

If you drank too much, you either got a ride or walked home, but if your car crashed, you paid the fine, the damages, and went about your business... until the MADD group kicked into high gear and went crazy.

Stop crying about being too old, or too young, too this or too that ... TOUGH!!

THATS LIFE! You are what you are, and that is right here, right now. It will change as sure as the sun will rise long after you and I are gone.

Just as you have a chance to learn from a classroom situation, or attend a college class at a community college where students are from all walks of life, so too this is a classroom of sorts. We have an opportunity to hear from a broad spectrum of people of all ages, all lifestyles, and get some guidance in an open forum.

Harvey Moul with his 'Bitch-slapping' is gonna get a trip to the woodshed, and he ain't too big or too old for it either. Why? Because enough of us know better than to use that line more than once for comical effect .... it ain't funny after the first time.

Where ever you are in this point in time .... is where you are ... deal with it. Some of us might not come this way again, so enjoy it while it lasts ... we have come here to do or say something that is important for each others lives, pay attention. It might be a lesson or information you can use.

Anyone can be anything, here on the net, but isn't better to be just who you are? It sure makes it a lot more fun to enjoy each others company, and make fun of each other in a friendly way of course.

Stop whining about being older, cause it means you have beat the odds of being dead. This whole deal of "life" only makes a difference... if you are alive.

So..... whatever reason the universe ( god if makes you feel better) has for you to be here will not end in death until you have completed the reason for that existence.

Geez, I am feeling awefully old .... I am starting to sound like "old people" I knew when I was 25?

****************************************************

I have a theory about kids .... they suck the life out of us older people and that is why we get old. We have forgotten how to be children.

I say .... I want to be a chld again.

You ain't suckin' the life out of me any more .... un-uh!

I don't care what the calendar says, I am gonna be a child from now on.

With any luck, I will live another fifty years and make it to 100.

There is no moral difference between driving drunk and standing next to the road and randomly shooting at cars with a grenade launcher.

You know what they say about getting into an argument with someone who is crazy? Nobody will be able to tell which is which.

The best solution for Brucie the Whackjob is to pretty much ignore him. Most of the time I just skip over his long, rambling, pointless drivel and read the one after it. Have yet to make it all the way through one of his towering pillars of wisdom, but I'm sure they just continue to get even more disjointed as they proceed.

Hi guys,

I'm a grand old 20 ... will be 21 in November. Feeling a lot older recently seeing as in the last 2 weeks i've moved in with my g/f and got a real job.

Realising that there's a direct corrolation between getting drunk and not turning up for work and not having enough money to pay the rent is a sobering experience (pun possibly intended!). It's not like being back at university!

My first computer was an Amstrad 1640 PC. It had proper floppy disks (5 1/4 inch) and as an optional extra ...... **drum roll** ......... a 20Mb hard drive! I thought that was massive.

On the subject of cars, if you chainsawed me in half (no-one get any ideas!) you'd see a blue oval running through me. I just love old Fords. They're cheap to buy, easy to maintain, and finding parts is cheap and easy. Got my first car back in December, a Ford Sierra 1.8LX (that's a Ford Merkur (sp??) to you Yanks, think you only got the performance version, the XR4i). Picked it up for free, needed £50 of welding to go through it's MOT, ran it for a month or so, decided the 1.8CVH engine was crappy, so sold the car for £300. Then i bought another Sierra, this time a 2.0L estate for £185. That 1 got introduced to a brick wall on a wet roundabout one night at about 25mph (oops). My current ford is a Mk3 Ford Capri, it's older than i am! Made in 1982, it's dark green with a black vinyl roof, and a 4 speed gearbox. It's not quite mint, but it's in excellent condition with no rust! The wheezy 1.6L pinto engine was quickly dropped for a 2.1L ex-rally pinto. Me and a mate spent a week installing that, along with the carb off a 3L Essex engine (Weber 38DGAS) and it now goes like stink, has an amazing induction raw, and drinks jungle juice like it's going out of fashion! No idea about power, but 125mph comes up suprisingly easy and if you put your foot down at 40, it's doing 65mph before you've noticed!

Sorry, i could babble cars all day ... maybe should start a new thread allowing us petrol heads to babble on to our hearts content. :D

It's fun reading here, going back through old posts I'd not seen.

Okay, I'll play along.

I'm going to be a half century old in 50 more weeks. Not the oldest here by any means, but probably over the median.

When I started driving gas was only 23 cents per gallon, but my after-school job only paid 87 cents per hour and my car only got 16 miles per gallon...on a good day. Gas may now be 8 times what it was then, but I get paid more than 17 times as much as I did then, and my truck gets more than half-again the mileage I used to get.

"My" first computer was a DEC PDP-8 that was about the size of two bookcases, and time-shared among 6 terminals that each got a whole 4k to play with. We saved our programs on punched paper tape, and if the computer crashed (which it did frequently) we rebooted it by flipping toggle switches on the front to enter several hundred lines of 8-bit code so it could then understand a paper tape spool that would teach it to read a magnetic tape. Our primary language was EduSystem BASIC.

I also used a key-punch machine to punch cards for batch processing on an IBM 360, and we too used FORTRAN (Formula Translator) and COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language).

As to who is the youngest, I think we now have at least one member who is 16. I don't know if any are younger than that.

Kimpatsu

You should complete the Birthday field in your Profile, Brian.
I, too, remember FORTRAN (FORmula TRANSlation), COBOL, and BASIC, as well as PASCAL for good measure. I remember remote modems that were basically a cradle for the phone handset, and which sent data at the princely baud rate of 12 kpbs. I remember monochrome monitors that supplied only various shades of green, and I remember plugging it into a real TV to watch newreaders look like Martians.
I remember the enourmous hairdos of the early 1980s, with Bonnie Tyler on the radio every other song, and playing pool in the local bar when I should have been studying.
I remember being younger.

I only admit my age when it's relevent to the topic at hand; I try not to advertise it.

You had video monitors? We had ASR-33 Teletypes that printed out on big rolls of pale tan paper; and, yes, the telephone handset was cradled over a speaker/mic setup to "talk" to the Bell something-or-the-other modem at the computer end of the line.

I don't know how Bonnie Tyler managed to sing entire concerts with that raspy voice of hers, but I did like It's A Heart Ache (if that was the actual title) and Holding Out for a Hero.

Those were the days.

In most respects the difference between 41 and 49 is negligible; but when it comes to computers...well, it's sort of like "dog years."

While the DPD-8 and the System 360 were the first computers I used, the first computer I owned was a Commodore 64, with a cassette drive. My best friend owned a "Trash 80" and I envied him the floppy disks (which back then really were floppy).

The difference shows: I lost interest in computers until they became common appliances, while he went on to work for Travelling Software, Attachmate, and -- lastly -- Microsoft.

He's now retired and travels the world, and I work nights and holidays living paycheck to paycheck.
