I'm writing and illustrating a Japanese story, similar to a fairy tale. It's based in the Tokugawa era, so I'm having to do a lot of research. One of the problems I've run into was whether or not women took the family name of their husband when they were married.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, generally speaking, women take the name of their husband upon marriage. There are cases, however, where a man becomes an adoptive bridegroom (yoshi) and takes his wife's family name. This is still a not altogether uncommon occurrance, by the way.

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much, Mr. Skoss. I thought it would be easy to do a period piece, but I suppose that it's easy to forget how much goes into a culture of any time period.
