View Full Version : Jigotai or Jigohontai?

I was just wondering about a quick translation...

Is it proper to write Jigotai or JigoHontai to denote what would be a basic/ready defensive posture (in jujutsu, fwiw)?

Hon means basic, right?

So wouldn't it be nitpicking to worry about which is right?

But then again, although I'm pretty sure it is, is Jigotai even a word?

Not familiar with either of those words.
How about 'kamae'?

Jigohontai = "fundamental self-defense posture" i.e. facing front with neither foot forward.

Put your right foot forward and it becomes migi jigotai.

Left foot forward is hidari jigotai.

Jigotai (with no modifier) refers to the posture in a more general sense, without specifying a left-, right-, or neutral-version.

Same thing with shizentai vs. shizenhontai.
