browser display problem

Hello,

I am just wondering why my browser can display Japanese fonts in some pages but not others. I can even type Japanese entries in some forum, but when it is displayed, it either shows up as ???????, or some alient fonts that I totally don't recognize.

Does anybody know what the problem is? What can I do to fix it?

Hi Andrew,

I am using Mac OS X (10.1.4).

I am not familiar with computer terms, but I think my "IME" is called "kotoeri". It came with the OS.

I use both Safari and IE5.5 as web browser, I have problem displaying some pages with both of them. For example, both of them can display online news such as mainichi, asahi, yomiuri; I can type and read Japanese fonts on hotmail and some other BBS. However, it doesn't display your signature properly, which I assume to be Japanese. I tried to enter "budo" in japanese on my above post, it shows up as ???? on my browser.

I am not sure what the character encoding it uses, I always assume it's UNICODE. Do you know were I can check on my computer? Should I search under my OS? Or my internet browser?

BTW. I also downloaded a lot of text files that my computer will not display. x_x So I am guessing it's my OS's problem?

Thank you Andrew, I will do a search for IE update. The link you gave me is for Win XP, which my mac doesn't agree with :(

Without giving away trade secrets (I'm an I18N web engineer) suffice to say that e-budo is encoded in Shift-JIS when displaying Japanese. Might tray manually switching your browser's encoding to Shift-JIS.

Sometimes the browser figures out the proper encoding, often it doesn't.

is encoded in JIS (ISO-2022-JP)

Like I said, sometimes the browser succeeds at figuring out the encoding, often it fails. First thing to try is manually try every Japanese encoding option under the browser's encoding options.
