Man viciously knifes buddy to cover-up robbery
IZUMIOTSU, Osaka -- A man has been arrested for savagely attacking a friend, stealing his wages and leaving him fighting for his life in a hospital, police said Monday.
Takayuki Konaka, 31, unemployed of no fixed address, was arrested for the attempted robbery and murder of his friend, 29-year-old Takahiro Akimi.
Akimi remains in a coma after he fell unconscious following the alleged attempt on his life on April 10.
Konaka admits to the allegations against him.
Police said Konaka broke into Akimi's house on April 10. He ate some instant noodles and then headed upstairs to try and find something of value to steal.
Akimi had not been expected home until later, but he arrived just before 10 p.m., well before Konaka had anticipated. When Akimi headed up to the second floor, Konaka stabbed him to prevent his burglary from being exposed.
Several days before the incident, Akimi had brought home about 200,000 yen in cash, his wages for work as a supermarket employee. It is believed the money was still in his home when Konaka broke in. (Mainichi Shimbun, April 21, 2003)
