Showdown on crowded bus ends in stabbing

A man suffered serious stomach wounds after being stabbed following an argument with two men on a Metropolitan bus, police said.

The man, whose name was not released, ran into a police box in the Taito-ku district of Japan's capital at about 9:50 p.m. on Friday and said, "I've been stabbed in the stomach."

Investigators said the man had become involved in an argument with two men on a bus running through the area. As the argument heated up, one of the men told the victim to "get off" the bus, and the three got out at a bus stop.

Soon after they exited the bus one of the two men, who appeared to be aged between about 40 and 50, pulled out a knife and stabbed the passenger in the stomach and then fled.

The bus, which was traveling from Ueno-Matsuzakaya to Minami-senju, was crowded with about 30 passengers on board at the time, police said. (Wire reports, April 26, 2003)
