The Guardian journalist Simon Hoggart received a phone call one sultry summer's afternoon from a clear nutter who claimed that aliens were beaming microwaves into the local Oddbins store near his home, which made him collapse whenever he passed the store. Clearly a fruitcake, right?
Well, Simon Hoggart rang the store, and they told him that in the summer, they left their doors wedged open to let the air circulate, but that meant local dogs kept wandering in, so they had installed a transmitter that emitted a high-pitched shriek too shrill for humans to hear, but which chased away the dogs.
Our nutter was right after all. (And Oddbins staff are definitely aliens... :D )
