With the recent closure of U.S. military installations in Panama, to include the U.S. Army's jungle warfare training installation at Fort Sherman, the Corps' Jungle Warfare Training Center (JWTC), formerly known as the Northern Training Area (NTA), on Okinawa has established itself as one of the DoD's premier jungle warfare training areas. Although the original site of NTA will be significantly reduced as a result of the December 1996 Special Action Committee Report Recommendation (MCG, May98, p. 8) from approximately 18,400 acres to around 9,400 acres, the Corps did gain some 300 acres of water area adjacent to NTA for training where no beach frontage had previously existed.

Now that the JWTC is no longer landlocked, it can expand its training opportunities, to include conducting various scenarios from the sea...
