I've been reading "Nito-ryu no Naraikata" by Arazeki Nitosai, which is copyright 1994. In it, he writes that in Showa 62 (1987, right?), the ZNKR established the length and weight for nito as 114 cm max length and 425 g min weight for the daito, and 62 cm max length and 360 g min weight for the shoto. According to both Ozawa's "Kendo: The Definitive Guide" which has rules current as of 1995 and the ZNKR kendo dictionary, the weight of the shoto is specified as between 280 g and 300 g.

So, does anyone know when and why the legal weight of the shoto was changed? If it did go from 360+ g to 280 - 300 g, that seems like quite a large change.

I reference http://www.bogubag.com/Shinai/shinai_size.html and my copy of Nito-Ryu no Waza to Riron, published in 2003. They both indicate the Shoto's weight for an adult man is 280g to 300g.

As far as exact reason for the change, I wouldn't know.
