I'm new to the Jo world. Besides shindo muso ryu and uchida ryu, my dojo trains in tosui ryu tanjo. Any info out there?

I think I got my terms mixed up, or my kanji skills ain't what they used to be. Besides uchida ryu, what other forms of tanjo are there?

What other forms of tanjo are there? Depends. If you include the term hanbo as an equivalent. Or sutekki (meaning walking stick). In fact, Uchida-ryu sutekkijutsu (tanjojutsu) is also referred to as Chuwa-ryu tanKENjutsu in some dojo, especially in the Fukuoka area. The weapon is, however, a tanjo (at least in the embu I've seen). If/when a kodachi is used, I suppose the waza change to some extent.

I've never heard of Tosui-ryu, so I wonder if you can provide a bit of information about it. What are the characters for the name of the ryu? Who was the founder? When/where was it created, and what kind of curriculum does it have? What are the dimensions of the weapons used? Is there any other distinctive characteristic of the school? (Thanks for any information you can provide.)

Incidentally, forum rules state that people need to put their name in their signature. Please do so in future posts.

I don't practice myself, but NPO Hougyoku-kai's Jodobu includes:
Shindomuso-ryu Jodo, Tosei-ryu and Uchida-ryu tanjo among others:

Forgive the cheesy translation, original Japanese is here:

That translation says Nakawa-ryu tankenjutsu instead of Chuwa-ryu. I'm guessing it's just an outright mistake, though. Chuwa-ryu is quite interesting in that there are different styles for men and women, with the female style being more violent, or so I've heard.

That'd be the extent of my knowledge,

Oh and, just noticing, what's rendered as Nihougon is another part of the Tosei-ryu curriculum, not another name for Uchida-ryu. Presumably it'd be like futakata and konbo, some sort of training where each side wields a stick.

Sorry,
