Hi,

trying to find some informations about Kushanku, i realized, that there were existing some persons called Chatan Yara. One was born around 1660, the next 100 years later etc.
Are these people from one familie ? Who hast some informations about them and who is the "real" CHATAN Yara ?

Hello Thomas,

Kushanku is said to have had two important students, Sakugawa and Chatan Yara, which both handed down their respective version of the Kushanku Kata. The Chatan Yara no Kushanku is the 18th Kata of Matsubayashi Shorin Ryû (of the late Nagamine Shoshin). This seems to be the Chatan Yara you have been searching for, and you can check the dates.

He also did Kobujutsu, and - other than in Sakugawa's case - there is not only a Bô, but also a Sai and a Tunfa-Kata which carries his name.

There were more known Yara's, like a Yara Satunushi, who was a famous Ryukyu Go-player.
There also was a Yara Pechin, who came from Yomitan. That's why he is alo called Yomitan Yara. He may was a descendant of Chatan Yara and lived in 19th century.
All those were of rank, suggesting that it is at least possible that they were of one family, and that the rank was given hereditary in that family.

It was Yomitan Yara (Yara Pechin) who had been the teacher of some other Te and Kobujutsu experts in the 19th century. That's why he is sometimes confused to be Chatan Yara (student of Kushanku) himself.
