Howdy!

Day 1 of the 55th Honinbo was finished in Kyoto, Japan.

Here are moves 1-5:

Of interest ... Black has opened with the low version of the Chinese Opening characterized by q16, q3, r9. (White has opened with a nirensei opening - two star point opening.) The high version of the Chinese Opening would be characterized by q16, q3, and q9. A simple, if not standard, continuation of the low Chinese Opening would be as follow:

Play in the upper right corner has a few slight varients, but you get the idea. The Chinese opening is reputed to strike a nice balance in territory and influence. (One of these days, I'll present a rather famous game that shows off the Chinese Opening rather well.) Back to the game, white played differently so as not to allow the extension at 6 in the previous diagram. The rest of the game record for day 1 is as follows:

White 6 currently seems to be a fairly popular move. White 6 has been seen as far away as k4 in the past (I've even seen a game record once where white 6 was even further left).

We'll have to wait for the rest of the game since it hasn't been played yet. Not sure what'll happen ... should be interesting.
