Howdy!

An interesting life and death problem came about during a recent game of mine. Black plays, white dies.

Not a particularly difficult problem (I recognized the solution instantly, then spent a couple of seconds reading it thoroughly), but not an absolute beginner problem either.

Enjoy!

r19, q19 for black. white if continue to play will capture r19, q19, s19, t19. white will only have one real eye then and will be dead. Many variations for white, but this is probably his best defense if he doesn't realise he is dead and wisely moves on to a profitable portion of the board.

Burp,
In your solution if b 1 is @ s19, then w 2 is @ s18 and white lives. b 1 @ r19 is the only solution.

Howdy Jared!

Let's look at what happens when white plays s18 in response to black s19:

http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=410710&a=3028904&p=23095674&Sequence=0

Black responds with r19 and white does not have an adequate reply. If white q19, black t19 and white is dead. White could try to establish a ko by playing as follows:

http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=410710&a=3028904&p=23095672&Sequence=0

This doesn't work, since in reality a ko can not be established ...

http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=410710&a=3028904&p=23095671&Sequence=0

Black 7 at t19 creates the bent 4 in the corner shape ... under Japanese rules a bent 4 in the corner is dead.

Conclusion, white s18 doesn't work ... white is dead.

Looking at Black 1 at r19 ... a ko results:

http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=410710&a=3028904&p=23095667&Sequence=0

Black 5 at t19 starts the ko. White MUST win the ko to live. However, allowing white a chance (even by ko) to live is failure :( ... since white can be unconditionally killed by playing Black 1 at s19 (therefore, s19 should be played).

Questions, corrections, comments, alternatives?

Enjoy!
