12-yr-old murder suspect admits molesting another boy

Yomiuri Shimbun

The 12-year-old middle school student suspected of murdering a 4-year-old boy in Nagasaki early this month has told investigators he molested a 3-year-old boy at a shopping mall in the city in late April, The Yomiuri Shimbun learned.

The case occurred at a mall about one kilometer north of the large electrical appliance store where Shun Tanemoto was abducted on July 1, police said.

The assailant reportedly forced the boy to take off his clothes and discarded them. Tanemoto's body was naked when it was found.

The student, whose case has been sent to the Nagasaki Family Court, reportedly has told police he talked to several other small children after abusing the 3-year-old boy.

According to the Nagasaki prefectural police, the boy was playing on the second floor of the shopping center at about 1:45 p.m. on April 27, when he was lured away by a "young man" and taken by elevator to the fifth floor. The assailant fled after forcing the boy to undress on a landing on the sixth floor.

The boy was found crying and naked, but uninjured, by a shopper. His clothes were found discarded on the street in front of the entrance to the mall's first floor parking lot, the police said.

The student visited the mall frequently, and witnesses reported seeing him playing in the area where the boy was lured from.

A day before the incident, a 4-year-old boy playing in the same area was enticed away by an unidentified man, physically abused on the fifth floor and then pushed off the building onto the roof of a parking garage about five meters below, injuring his feet and face. The student has denied any involvement in this incident, the police said.

Teacher circulated photo of boy

FUKUSHIMA--A male teacher at a municipal middle school in Fukushima showed a photograph of a 12-year-old boy suspected of murdering a 4-year-old boy in Nagasaki to his students in class after obtaining it from the Internet, it was learned Monday.

According to the school, the teacher at Fukushima Dai-San Middle School circulated the mugshot in three third-grade civics classes.

The teacher was quoted as saying he wanted to use the photo to show that human rights could be infringed easily via the Internet. He added that circulating the photo among his students was inappropriate.

The incident was revealed Saturday after some of the students' parents complained.

Family court to start hearings in case of 12-year-old suspect

Yomiuri Shimbun

The Nagasaki Family Court on Wednesday decided to start hearings in the case concerning a 12-year-old student housed in a juvenile classification center in connection with his alleged murder of a 4-year-old boy in early July.

An immediate focus of the hearings on the juvenile case concerns whether a psychiatric test should be conducted on the middle school student, who has told police that he pushed the victim from a multistory parking garage in the city, according to observers.

It is not known when the first hearing will take place. In the past, family courts opened hearings on cases of a similar nature several days after they decided to start such procedures.

During hearings that follow, the family court will attempt to establish the circumstances surrounding the murder allegedly committed by the 12-year-old boy, while also working to determine whether he needs special custody until his alleged criminal tendency is corrected.

He will be sent to an institution aimed at rehabilitating minors under the age of 14 if the court decides that he should be given such treatment.
