A teenager who admitted murdering a scaffolder in a samurai sword attack in the street has been jailed for life.

Jason Kelly, 19, will serve a recommended eight years for stabbing Robert Dunne with a single blow which punctured his lung and heart.

As the 31-year-old father of a baby boy got involved in a violent row with local youths, passer-by Kelly went to his nearby house in Outhwaite Street, Middlesbrough to fetch the 12in ornamental weapon.

When Mr Dunne went to grab a hammer from a friend's car, Kelly stabbed him from behind and the blade went in almost up to its hilt, Teesside Crown Court heard.

Kelly, who was still 18 at the time of the attack in January this year, was not part of the row but as he passed the incident near his home he shouted something at Mr Dunne.

When the scaffolder threatened him and his father, Kelly ran home, took the sword and ran back to stab Mr Dunne in front of horrified shoppers in the residential West Lane area of the town. His victim suffered "torrential bleeding" and died at Middlesbrough General Hospital just a mile away.

Kelly, described in court as "slight", handed himself in to police two days after the attack. The Recorder of Middlesbrough, Judge Peter Fox QC, gave the defendant credit for his plea of guilty and accepted Mr Dunne had a reputation for violence.
