Can anyone help by explaining why the kodachi is held at the end of the tsuka (gashira), instead of the area nearer the tsuba? Is there any significant reason to this? Thank you.

Assuming you're talking about Shinto Muso-ryu jojutsu, it's not. The manner in which a kodachi is (or should be) held is in the middle of the tsuka, with about 1.5~2 cm. (about the width of the index finger) between the tsuba and the index finger. This allows for a pliancy of movement and response for the kodachi, since it allows the weapon to be held in a proper hontemochi. If the kodachi is held at the end of the tsuka, it becomes unwieldy because the operator doesn't have any real sense of where the weapon is; if the kodachi is held too closely to the tsuba, tenouchi also becomes unwieldy, albeit for a different reason: the grip changes to gyakutemochi and that grip and the tsuba interfere with easy movement.

Hope this helps.

Hi Meik Skoss Sempei,

Yes, I was refering to Shinto Muso-ryu jojutsu.
Thank you for the detailed description.

I saw a Jo demonstration (from a distance) recently and
thought I saw the Uchidachi holding the kodachi at the
end of the tsuka. Maybe I was wrong.

Thanks again.
