CUBANS' RED GLARE: The United States didn't win any gold medals in judo at the Pan Am Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on Saturday, but its anthem was played anyway -- upsetting the Cuban delegation.
During the medal ceremony for Cuba's Danieska Carrion, "The Star-Spangled Banner" blared from the speakers, much to the dismay of the Cubans, who vigorously protested.
The mix-up was quickly fixed, and the Cuban anthem was played -- four times. Cuba won all four judo gold medals.
It was not the first mistake with anthems at the Pan Am Games. At several venues, the proper anthem could not be found or would not work on the CD players in use for the ceremonies. At all venues, only a portion of the anthems have been played.
At the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle, WA, the national anthem for North Korea was played during the medal ceremony for a South Korean.
