View Full Version : Training in London

Hello

I am moving to London in a few weeks and am really looking forward to continuing to train there.

However there are so many clubs, venues and instructors that I am a bit overwhelmed by the choice on offer.

I will be doing a Masters at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies which is part of the University of London, and living in Paddington. And on an extremely minute budget.

Any advice?

Hi Ruth,

At the Institute of Commonwealth Studies you'll be just around the corner from the ULU dojo on Malet street and within walking distance of UCL and SOAS.

As from mid September we'll be training as follows...

ULU: Tuesday/Thursday from 6:00 - 9:00
UCL: Monday 5:15 - 7:30
UCL: Friday: 5:30 - 7:30 and 7:30 - 9:30
SOAS: Wednesday: 6:30 - 8:30

There's venue membership issues with UCL but the others are free. 15 quid a month training fees covers all sessions.

You're more than welcome to join us.

Gassho

Southampton University dojo is only one hour away by train and if you hitch it's cheaper.
Dojo fees are £2 per week or £4 per week for 9 hours training, though the rules on personal friendship can appear, at first sight, a litle draconian.

Ade the merciless

PS I am kidding though you, and anyone else ever in the area,is welcome, bring your training uniform sometimes known as a Gi.

Ade - thank you for your kind offer but I'm afraid I would be banned from your dojo as I am not only seeing another Kenshi but am living with him and planning to marry him!!

Or does it not count if he is at another dojo???

Joking aside - when I am living in London I will hopefully be able to make it to one of those South Coast seminars/black belt courses that I keep hearing about.

George - are you Sensei at ULU and UCL and SOAS? ULU/UCL sounds like the best options for me, closest to the the uni. Do I just turn up or do I have to do anything first? Will you be having demos?

I'll be moving down on the 25th Sept, so I'll hopefully see you soon after that.

Doesn't count.
You're both welcome at one of those South Coast Seminars that you've heard so much about.
And it's all true, we have lots of fun.

Hi Ruth... You're more than welcome to join us.

Ruth, Imperial dojo is trying to find its feet again. They train Weds and Sundays. You'd be mad to not get in some hours with Mizuno Sensei and Jee Sensei. In fact there is no excuse for not training seven, even eight times a week :)

For my sins.

Keep an eye on the UCL web site and make a note of the contact numbers - it covers all the venues and will announce demos and such in the next couple of weeks. I'd suggest you turn up to one of the ULU sessions first - UCL will cost you 6 quid to get through the door

See you then.

Ruth, the best advice......

Train where you can, when you can........

Look on the BSKF website, it is updated fairly regularly.

As George said (he is always soooo right...... ;) ) his branch is probably the most convenient.....
But as Dave (Dunn) said, you should try to get in a session or two with Mizuno sensei.

And if you are ever out to the west of london then you could do far worse than look us up.......

(Ignore the south coast rabble..... you will only start drinking and socialising and stuff....... now is that any way for a kenshi to behave, I ask you ;) )

I don't know Steve. You used to come to the pub after training, until someone said it was your round and we've never seen you since :)

Sage advice from the tall one.
I have started doing just that and you wouldnt believe the amount of crap I'm deciding not to join in with.
