Hi All,

Does anyone have any videos of Karate Tournament knockouts that you could post for viewing pleasure. I thought this thread should be an archive for it.

I got the three tape set of J. T. Will's time as a ref. Joe Lewis is narrating and they put his fight with Greg Barnes on it - I don't remember if it ends in a knock-out but I can look it up.

There won't be any other k-o's on it, it is stuff from the earlier point tournaments with Chcuk Norris, Superfoot, etc.

There is a best knockdown of ashihara 2002 at
http://www.new-international-ashihara-karate-germany.de/sites/kumite/kumiteframe.htm
(also check the sabaki link for fun videos).

There are several kyokushin knockdown clips on:
http://www.acbbkyokushin.com/videokyokushin.htm
But they are mixed with other clips, so you have to search a bit.

there are a few short promo clips from the enshin knockdown tournament "sabaki challenge" at:
http://www.enshin.com/sabaki_videos.html
there are a few knockout clips there aswell.

Note that the above are all knockdown variations, so no punches to the head, only kicks.

There are a few shidokan fights available at:
http://www.shidokan.com/2002events.htm#
(shidokan does knockdown, but uses boxing-gloves and allows head punches). But I dont have realplayer installed right now, so I dont know if its good clips.

I have more bookmarks, but I have to dig a while to find them (generaly I D-L the clips to my collection and forgets where I put the bookmarks)

I can't tell that the Karate man is Kyukushin....How can you tell Martin ?

Was that the end of the match ?

That was what was said on the site, and I know nothing more about the bout.

Having looked at it again, I think it looks like the tkd guy attacks during a break. the karate guy is not ready (looks away), and the ref tries to jump between.

Anyone seen the 1991 Sabaki video? You can see me and my Japanese friend in the audience throughout...(Just had to mention it):) Btw, there are some great knockouts on that tape! The 1989 tape, Patrick Smith (Of UFC Fame) knocks a guy off the runway in two seconds! I wish I had a way to post those clips...

Jon,

I believed I have this video in fact we were watching it last night. This has got to be one of the best from the Sabaki collection.

30 years in karate and I just don't get this AT ALL.

I know only one practioner of full contact karate personally. I had not seen him for 1.5 years, but it was unmistakable when I saw him last week. Driving 50+ in a 30 MPH zone, weaving through traffic flipping anyone the bird who got in his way. Prior to that was when he was leaving a school after he knocked out a 2-3 month student.
Black belts vs. white belts????

I don't think I will ever understand this!

Steve,

This is one individual you're describing. Are you trying to imply that all full contact karateka are like that?

As it happens, my last full contact sensei (my mum made me stop full contact karate before my a-levels ... important exams you take at 18 to get into university in the UK for those who didn't know) acted just like the man you describe outside the dojo. He was loud, rude, inconsiderate and drove like a maniac! Inside the dojo however, he was still loud and rude, but very careful, always fully aware of his duty of care to his students. Despite it being full contact i never saw any serious injuries (more than cuts and bruises) in my time there. I really enjoyed it, and it was a shame i had to give it up. Unfortunately i'm not in as good shape as i was then, otherwise i'd go back to it.

While i might of had a lot less time in karate (5 years), from what you say i've had more exposure to full contact karateka than you, and most of them are no different to other martial artists.

Mr. Beale,

What is there not to understand?

Full contact training and fighting, it helps one understand, and feel, what it is like to hit and be hit, which of your techniques are working and not worrking.

Pssssst. In case no one has told you , in self-defense situations you must really hit the other person. Pulling punches don't count.

No, I am not intending on making a sweeping generalization. This (ONE) guy was a jerk in and out of the dojo. The guy he knocked out ended up in the hospital with a concussion. He did this in a non-contact dojo. Just an idiot picking on a newbie. A real tough guy

What I don't understand, is white belts going contact against a white belt. I understand the lower ranks outlook as I have newbies challenge me all the time since they have "no fear", I say "no brains". But why would a BB agree to this????

blackbelts have no buissness fighting whitebelts all-out. That goes in full contact dojos aswell as in no-contact dojos.
Whitebelts has no buissness fighting whitebelts all-out, unless thay have received enough training. and then they are probably not whitebelt any longer.

But there are jerks in all types of martial arts, and maybe full-contact dojos might attract a few more macho types than the no-contact ones.
How that type of person manages to get to blackbelt without being weeded out is another question.

Antonio Osu!
I agree wholeheartedly with Antonio on this one. With due respect to my fellow Martial artists who practice Shotokan:
I practiced Shotokan for12 years before I met my teacher. We do knockdown/full contact, because, ultimately, this is the proper way that the old masters wanted to practice kumite. Knockdown competition rules are relatively recent, but the old way is not to pull punches. I thought I knew some stuff when I got to my teacher, but as I learned and developed my fighting body I found that I really was only practicing Sports.
Point fighting is sports. Period. I mean no dis-respect, but when it comes to Martial Arts you have to call a spade a spade.
With that in mind, my beginner adults do something that is very much like point fighting to get started. Light control contact.
My kids practice the same with full body shields and work their way up to hard contact.
There are always bad eggs in every system. So about that guy, I think you can say those who practice bare knuckle knockdown full contact Karate are not a bunch of crazed psychopaths who drive around at insane speeds. Most of us are respected Martial artists and or teachers, and responsible members of our communities. I resent the stigma attached to full contact Karate by Sport Karate practitioners. What we teach and practice has great value. We can sleep at night knowing that the cheques we collect at our Dojos go to teaching sytems that people can really use to defend themselves.
Just my opinion is all...
