I think it does make sense, It was pretty bad when you get these people up on the top posters who really don't contribute to the group much apart from silly posts. (yes, that includes me) Nothing wrong with silly posts though.

I just think its hard to figure out who has got any credability on this group anymore.

We used to have karma which was a great way of figuring out who knows there stuff and is a nice guy. If you are a newbie its hard to figure out who'd views in a discussion is more credible.

Then that went, so people used number of posts to see who hangs around in the place and knows everyone. Now thats gone too.

fair enough i do agree with john in doing it, but at least bring back the karma option so you know who's views stand up more.

The thing with Karma was people were abusing it. For someone they didn't like, they'd leave multiple negative karma, and for people in their little group, they'd leave multiple positive karma (often to try and cancel out multiple negative karma left by another group). All this made a mockery of the karma system.

If it were to be brought back, it'd need to be altered so you couldn't leave more than 1 positive or negative karma per person per thread (or per post).

I think if it could be altered, then it should be brought back (until people work out another way of abusing it!)

I think maybe Jon should start making people pay for it, like $5 dollars a year? it's not much and it would ween out trolls...

Like trolls couldn't afford $5? And, if the service is now fee-paying, we'd be able to demand certain other provileges in return. It's hard for John to ban someone, or even suspend them, if they've paid money to be here.

You can't abuse the 'thread rating' feature - it only allows you to vote once per thread.

As far as I can tell, the thread rating is just a very crude opinion poll, compiled from an average of those who can be bothered to vote. If only one person votes and gives it one star, well that's your lot.

Maybe someone just doesn't care for your post topics? C'mon guys, y'all need to get some kind of life if you are spending that much time on e-budo taking up bandwidth. If the vast majority of your posts are in the Member's Lounge, what does that say about your need to make some friends OFF the computer?

No, it just means that some people like to talk and have fun, and don't believe in discussing certain aspects about martial arts on the net.

I think the majority of a person's posts being in the lounge is simply proof that there is only so much you can say about a MA in a medium like this. After a point, you see the same topics popping up year after year. Once you've seen the 10th newbie post asking where he can get a sakabatou or if it is OK to perform tameshigiri on fruit, well, it just becomes old hat. So, you mainly hang out in the lounge, where there's usually new stuff.

Also, the path of budo is kind of a personal thing - something more to be done then talked about, I think. Then again, I have few friends and precious little desire to make any more - so perhaps that's it. :D

I've argued with everyone and argreed with most too, this works, that does, etc etc.

Only my family and you guys know I do martial arts, and even then no one knows what i do because it does not achieve anything. I don't hide it, but i would hate to mention it in every reply like some people.

Bruce, nobody cares that much about their post counts, it was just sprung on the high rollers suddenly creating something about which to chat, and that's all.

Putting yourself above the people who are posting about it (including yourself) doesn't come off, well, it just doesn't.

I get the feeling that you put your age on everything thinking you have something to say, and you do but not for that reason. You just don't put up the best of what a fifty year life may have brought you from the school of hard knocks. For the most part, we all have been there (not to fifty, to the school, though I have plus two).

If you think chatting about a drop in post count is nothing to sing about then don't write about it. Otherwise, unless you've been around a bit, your post count only means (meant) you post a lot. The fact I lost relatively few may say something about me, I don't know, but I know those I lost from the Member's lounge couldn't have been more than one-hundred and the must have been old, I just don't do anything other than checking to see if a thread is worth opening, or if one is worth starting, most of the time. I decided a long time ago that I all ready know what I know and I think long on whether others want to know it as well, so now I mostly reply, not start threads and then not nearly as often (ask John about the fires I started or continued. That's probably why he made me a moderator, so I would have to behave). I do sometimes open yours on those rare occasions (in the Lounge), as I think many are being too hard on you, but not because you don't have anything to say, but because you do, you just go on and on and on about it, to the point I realize I know what you've said by the end of a few or less sentences. I do that with others, as well, so please don't think I'm pointing you out, I'm replying to your reply, is all.

Someone said you have written some fine posts in the past and I agree. I just think you're a 'yenta' at times. So are many others, some just outrageously hoknik en chinik (Pho.) which does become tiresome sometimes, no most of the time.

This was far too long a post in a thread about post counts, but then, you started it.:p
