Sumo Comes to Texas!
Houston Samurai Sumo Team Try-Outs

The traditional Japanese sport of Sumo comes to Texas this Fall. The Lone Star Sumo Association (LSSA) will be holding try-outs for two teams; the Round Rock Ronin and the Houston Samurai. LSSA is a chapter member of the United States Sumo Federation. The first competition for these teams will be in early December at time and location in the Round Rock area to be announced. For information on the team try-outs, please see the details below.

The Try-outs, workshop and competition will be held at Finch's Gymnastics USA in northwest Houston.

$10 for workshop and competition
Houston's new Sumo Team, Houston Samurai, will be hosting a beginner's Sumo workshop and holding try-outs on Sunday, October 5th. We are looking for both men and women competitors for the light weight, middle weight and heavy weight divisions. Applicants must reside within 60 miles of Houston, Texas, be a U.S citizen, over 18 years of age and be in good physical and mental health. Applicants who make the team may be subject to steroid testing. The try-outs will be conducted in a workshop and mini-competition format.
The workshop portion will cover the rules and etiquette of Sumo competition and basic Sumo Techniques. Even if you are not planning on trying out for the Houston and are only want to get a brief introduction to Sumo, please feel welcomed to attend.
Those applicants who make the team will be expected to make regular practices and compete in the upcoming Lone Star Sumo Basho in early December.
All participants must be 18 years of age or older.
Attire:
Comfortable workout clothes. Mawashi encouraged.
Instuctors:
Bart Harris is the club leader for the Houston/Galveston Area Chapter of Lone Star Sumo. He has been Active in sumo for the last three years and has competed in Texas and Colorado.
John Hidalgo is the club leader for the Round Rock Chapter of Lone Star Sumo. He holds a 2nd degree Black Belt in Budo Taijutsu under the Bujinkan Dojo system.
