I just heard about this school. From what I hear it's really good price wise (70 a month for unlimited) and the quality of Judo is supposed to be very good there as well. Unfortunately, I have no contact info for the school. I don't even know where in NYC they are located. Does anyone have any info on this club? Thanks for your time.

Mr Shiina is a good friend of Sensei Oishi. I remember hearing much about him when I practiced at Oishis in the 80's.

FRom the Hudson Yudanshakai website (http://www.hudsonjudo.org/) Mr Shiina is located at:

Knights Judo Club
91-28 43rd Avenue
Elmhurst, NY 11373
Sensei: K. Shiina
718-429-9838
Schedule: W 5-7, F 7-9

From what I recall, I would say that you could rely on him as a valuable instructor.

Guts,

I don't know about current prices (always have been very reasonable), but as long as you are headed for the island you should also check out the Waseda Club in Baldwin. While Nick runs the dojo now, Yamashita still teaches often and is another of that same crew of sensei. It is about 8 blocks from the Baldwin stop on the Babylon LIRR. Click here (http://www.hudsonjudo.org/dojos/) for more info.

I really need to contact Yamashita for all the details...but in the early 1960s there was a full time dojo in NYC (78th St. I believe). The head instructor there went to Japan and recruited a bunch of judo champs to come to the U.S. and teach for several years. Yamashita, Shiina, and several other now high ranking Japanese instructors came over. Most stayed in the U.S. and several are still instructing in the NY area. Others have moved on.

Thank you very much, Elliot. I will keep that place in mind, it sounds wonderful. It's just a matter of getting there. But, that always falls into place somehow. :)

I trained with Master Shiina while I attendend St. John's in the early 90s. He is a HELLUVA teacher. If you're looking for Judo instruction in the NYC metro area, he is definitely to be considered.
