GENERAL COMMENTS:
This sword is a custom design by Bob Elder sensei, shibucho of the U.S. Toyama-ryu Federation. The sword is forged by Hanwei (Paul Chen) to Elder sensei’s specifications and designed specifically for tameshigiri (cutting).

The blade itself is forged from carbon steel and tempered in the traditional manner, giving it a beautiful notare hammon. Overall, it’s a stout blade with deep 1” tori-sori that cuts like a laser-beam (most swords seen today have koshi-sori, or, deeper towards the tsuka). It completely dwarfs production swords like the Hanwei PPK or the Shinto, etc.

Its overall balance is good and slightly oriented toward the tip. The tsuka is nicely carved with the traditional hour-glass shape typically not seen in Hanwei swords. The tsuka also follows the curvature of the blade quite nicely, another aspect not typically seen with Hanwei swords.
