With the current "rush" of infomation on huge swords it kinda of lead me to wonder what other ryuha still use huge swords.

Below are the list of ryuha (active ryuha) I know which train in really huge monster swords called Nodaichi/Choken (are there any other terms used to describe such swords?) As well as ryuha which use larger that standard size swords.

I was thinking with the help of members here maybe this list can be expanded & shared with the rest of e-budo? http://216.10.1.92/ubb/smile.gif

Nodaichi/Choken Ryuha

1.Koden Enshin Ryu
Located:Osaka
lead by Fumon Tanaka

2.Nodaichi Jigen Ryu
Located:Kagoshima
Lead by Ito Masao

3.Kage Ryu (Can't leave this our of the list or else Hyakutake san would frown http://216.10.1.92/ubb/smile.gif )
Located:Yanagawa
Lead by Tachibana Tamio

On a side note, I was wondering what sort of Mekugi (Normal bambo,Turtle shell,e.t.c)and how thick the diameter of these mekugi are for these "Tall-as-you-swords". I presume they must be different than the normal because of the huge size of such swords.

Larger than standard size sword ryuha

1.Hayashizaki Muso Ryu
Located:Yamagata
Lead by: Okuyama Kanzen

2.Shinmuso Hayashizaki Ryu
Located in:Tokyo
Lead by:Sasamori Takemi

3.Oishi Shinkage-ryu (Got this from Kage Ryu article at Koryu online)
Located in :Yanagawa
Lead by:Oishi Eichi

Anybody wish to take over from here? http://216.10.1.92/ubb/smile.gif

Cheers,

I think a large large number of schools used to use bigger swords than they do now. One can evidence of this in various school's scrolls and you can also see how a fairly large number of older swords have been cut down to match Edo period specs. For example Hoki ryu seems to have used longer than average swords in the past (the founder is reported to have used a 3 shaku 3 sun sword). I have meet and seen a few rare older practitioners of the ryu who still use bigger swords than usual (although not anything approaching Kage ryu size by any means), but in these days of the ZNKR seitei kata and all, the practice seems pretty much lost to the average practioner.

P.S. As a side note, has anyone heard anything about Tanaka Fumon's Koden Enshin ryu outside of what he has published in his two books? (feel free to contact me off list on this)

Yes, two mekugi ( I use well seasoned bamboo soaked in oil)
