I was wondering if anyone had any references that indicated just how the fan was used by Japanese Generals to direct troops?

I am considering using a fan as a way of gathering/directing kids at a big seminar we are going to. Visually it would provide a 'beacon' but it would be cool to know what some of the signals were and include some accuracy.

Unfortunately, I don't read Japanese, so unless it has lots of pictures, I'll need it in English!

Thanks for your help!

1)ougi
a brief explanation about Ougi(Folding Fan):

2)gunsen
The sort of ougi which used to direct troops are called "gunsen", and sorry I don't know how to use them.

3)tessen
And there's another type of ougi called "tessen". They are created/derived from gunsen, and made with iron part for self-defence use. Some of them no longer have the function as a fan, remains folded forever or a mere iron stick.

Thanks, kasa! I appreciate the Japanese links, there was one site there with some good pictures of the fighting aspects of Tessen. I'll have one of my buddies, who speaks Japanese, take a look at the one catalogue. One or two of those could be really cool!

Anyone see any signalling info? I'll try a search using the term gunsen.

Some good cutting pictures on one of the the last two links!

Bumping this up. Still interested in the signalling aspect.

Anyone recommend a good DVD on the Tessen? I'd like to find something that doesn't involve the jutte, but have found nothing so far.

Did you check out Don Angier's tape? It does have both tessen and jutte but they are covered as seperate subjects. I would say its the best out there on the subject.
