Welcome to Ryukyuan Unarmed Martial Arts ... one of three new E-Budo forums dedicated to the martial arts and culture of the Okinawa and her sister islands in the Ryukyu Archipelago.

Due to their strategic position as both military and trading ports, Okinawa and the rest of the Ryukyu Islands have, throughout history, been heavily influenced by China, mainland Japan and now the USA. Despite this fact, these islands have maintained a distinct martial and civil culture all their own.

These forums have been created to allow E-budoka the opportunity to share and gather information related to the Ryukyus. This specific forum ... Ryukyuan Unarmed Martial Arts ... will focus on the open or empty hand fighting arts of the Ryukyu Islands including, but not limited to ...

** Uchina'di **
Also known as Ti', sui'di, naha'di and other names, this is for lack of a better term, the "original" Ryukyuan martial art and the predecessor of all modern karate ryuha.

** Okinawan Karate **
The various ryuha of Okinawan karatedo most of which preceded the mainland Japanese karate ryuha. Which is better? Okinawan or Japanese karate? That is a matter which is sure to be debated with no clear resolution. One point which is clear ... they are most certainly different animals. Examples of Okinawan karate are ... Shorin-ryu (Matsubayashi, Kobayashi, Shobayashi and others), Goju-ryu and Uechi-ryu.

** Kyusho-jutsu **
Sometimes known as Tuite and often consider part, if not all of Ti', Kyusho-jutsu is vital or pressure point striking. Some consider it the hidden secret of all Okinawan karate. Others consider it complete bunk. Both sides of the debate are welcome here.

All E-budo forum guidelines/rules apply. Enjoy!

Good luck in these forums. My instructor, Obata Toshishiro Sensei, studied for a time with Inoue Motokatsu Sensei. We still study the bojutsu as gaiden waza in our Aikibujutsu Kenkyukai, and have occasionally been taught some other weapons as well. Really good stuff.

I am very pleased to find a serious forum for Traditional Budo, and specially for the preservation of Okinawan Martial Arts.

Today, most Dojos in Okinawa practice Sports Karate. In fact is that there are a very few teachers or serious martial artists left in Okinawa - the birthplace of karate.

In our generation, we will see more authentic Okinawan Dojos with "GAIJIN" teaching the Traditional Way: "BU NO MICHI"....
