the weapon that was used by the robot assassin in the movie Hellboy. it looked like a bladed Tonfa. so is this weapon really just a modified tonfa or a completely different weapon? and when I mean modified I mean the bladed weapon can be used proficiently using tonfa training

We were talking about this in kobudo the other day. While the similarities were striking I question the practicality of having a bladed weapon rest against you forearm. The slashing applications made it a completely different animal in my very novice kobudo opinion.

I have not seen the movie yet, but what you described sounds like a bagua weapon.

If so, these are not used in the same manner as the tonfa.

No, they looked like a tonfa except steel, the blade was a blade, pointy on both ends and could spin / flip them with wrist twist.

I haven't seen the movie either but,
I think I remember Sho Kosugi (sp) using them on
his TV show Ninja-robics. Started out as a cheesy
show but later he started profiling karateka from
Okinawa and Japan.
