Instructors from the Toyama school test cutting demo circa 1936 at the Nihonto Tanren Kai at the Yasukuni shrine in Toyko.

BTW, this organization produced over 8,000 swords and 50 tons of tamahagane.

Very interesting. Notice that all of the students who are wearing hakama have sleeves that are no longer than elbow length.

Actually, those guys are swordsmiths, polishers, etc. Maybe they had short sleeves because of the kind of work they were doing. I am not sure if they are actually training or just watching.

John,

What do I have to do to get a hard copy of this historic photo? Seriously.

Also, I'd like to get permission to post it on my web site with the proper credits.

Thanks,
Guy

The book is available from the JSSUS. It is called: Yasukani-to Tradition and Ideal Beauty. Written by Tom Kishida and published by Yuzankaku Publishing Co. If you buy it from the JSSUS, you get for the same retail price of $50 a complete translation done by Kenji Mishina! Well worth the price, but I think you have to be in the JSSUS to get it. There is some very good history in it and a few other interesting pics. Most of the book deals with the forging of swords during the WW-2 at this foundry.
