Konichiwa,

I was practising kata recently with someone new and senior.

While getting into the Shidachi's role and through the whole set, I felt terrified at the metsuke and the whole form of the Uchidachi.

Suddenly, its no longer just normal practise. No longer just doing the Kata. I have the feeling that I have to get everything correct. One chance, one technique. No mistakes, you can get cut. I had to quickly calm my mind, check my breathing and get on with the kata.

A sense of vulnerability prevails.

Feeling was very good after that "training" though.

Anyone can explain if its normal to get such a feeling while pratising kata?

I occasionally get it from people who are actually trying to fight rather than being tied up in trying to do the technique.

When my instructor does uchidachi it is quite terrifying, not least of all being that he is a huge guy anyway. It does make one sweat a tad!

Overcoming that feeling of vulnerability is the only way to get something real out of a kata though, otherwise it is just a dance.
