Correct me if I'm wrong but, i believe that the kejutsu part of SRMjo is Kasumi Shinto Ryu which was founded by one Doumu Hisamoto / Oni Doumu.

Dose anyone know where more information can be found about this man and Kasumi Shinto Ryu in gereral?

Furthermore, it is said that Hisamoto used a polearm which was 10 inches in diamiter and reinforced with iron spikes. Any one know about this weapon, it's dimentions, and use. I suspect it may have been more of a training aid similar to ryukyu hojo undo rather than a weapon as such.

Thanks for reading,

This is quite a well done topic and I think you'll find quite a bit on this jo forum if you do a search.

I find this website very informative...

although I seem to remember that Meik found some of the content questionable.

The weapon in question is probably some sort of tetsubo ("iron staff"). A tetsubo is essentially a huge club. Some were made of iron and some were made of wood reinforced with iron straps and spikes (I think these had a different name, but I can't remember it offhand). According to what I have read, they were often employed as portable batterng rams for knocking down fortifications and castle gates. Needless to say, they could only be wielded by someone who was exceptionally large and strong.

Mr. Cognet,

There was a brief thread on the kenjutsu within the SMR jo system some time ago that might prove enlightening.

Hope this helps,

'Konsaibo' perhaps Mr. Hartman?

Yeah, that's it, but I think it's spelled "kansaibo".

Another related question, who did Gonnosuke train under before he created his patented jo technique? I seem to think it was Matsumoto Bizen.

If so, what style did matsumoto founder? I think it was either Kashima Shinto Ryu, Kashima Shinryu, Kashima Shinkage Ryu or something like that.

Muso Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi studied Tenshinsho-den Katori Shinto Ryu.

He also practiced Kashima Shin Ryu under Matsumoto Bizen No Kami.

The only link I've seen between Tsukahara Bokuden and Kasumi Shinto Ryu is on Jodo.com. Every other reference I am familiar with describes Bokuden's school as Kashima Shinto Ryu. (Jodo.com also referes to a Japanese family named Macabei, so I would treat their information cautiously.)

More info on Shindo Muso Ryu, and an e-mail address, can be found here: http://www.shinto-muso-ryu.org/.

I believe Konsaibo is correct.

Here's a link to Koryu.com with a longish article on various types of bo, including the konsaibo:

I read somewhere that Gonnosuke trained under Sakurai Osumi. Was Sakurai Osumi a student of Makabei Hisamoto / Oni Doumu or was he just a retainer?

Next question: Hirano Kichizo the 13th headmaster of SMRjo introduced kenjutsu to SMRjo. Did Hirano Kichizo train under anyone else besides his SMRjo instructor? Someone of decent from Makabei Hisamoto per chance?

Oh, forgot to add: Hirano Kichizo's son who was a practitioner of SMRjo wrote a book about jo. The contents of this book may hold some useful clues. I forget the title of it but I'll look around.
