Hi! I'm new to the forum. Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any good judo teachers or schools in Vancouver, B.C., preferably not 'sport' judo. Also, is it true that most judo practitioners end up permanently screwing themselves up physically?

thanks,

Hi, Gary
Welcome to E-budo!

While I don't know anyone personally (or precisely someone who is not retired), you may want to contact the BC Judo association at: http://home.istar.ca/~judo/ , or email at: judo@istar.ca

I'm sure you can find what you are looking for but most dojo offer a competitive curriculum or practical/classical programs.

Other who might know are Kim Taylor at the Iaido-L list, or katayor@uoguelph.ca or try http://ejmas.com , combative sport journal, or jsvinth@juno.com .

They may be more familiar with the cold and wild North.
Try http://www.google.com . It is the best search engine I've used for MA. Try Dogpile.com, too.

BTW: You sure ask pointed question for a yiddishe kapf.:D

Mark,

Thanks (I think):-) I'm a little weak in the yiddish department, though my spanish is pretty good and my mandarin is getting better all the time.

Gary,
My Yiddish is almost non-existent, as well, but I was exposed to it long enough to know a few words and phrases; mostly bad ones.

Yiddishe Kapf simply means "Jewish head" but in real terms, it is like saying a nice Jewish boy.:)

Just wait. There are some on this forum who put me to shame in that department.

The Burnaby Judo club is a reputable club. Boy, I like Vancouver.

Hi - Sorry its taken me so long to respond - I was an E-Budo member before the crash, and just never got around to signing back up...Lazy...Anyway, I'm a sandan and Nat A Referee from the University of Alberta Judo CLub, and go every year to referee at the Steveson Judo Club Shiai in February. They always have a high quality number of judoka entered - I've never worked out at the club, but it appears strong.

Howard Alexander is in the Vancouver area and is one of the finest resources available for judo. He was a Kodokan kenshusei (research student) for several years at the Kodokan in the 60's and was a kata specialist who was very close to Kotani sensei.

Howard is a high school teacher and may be willing to communicate with you if you look him up.

You can see photos of him in Draeger's kata book, "Formal Judo" which was published in 82, I think.
