Go down to the bottom of the page and click "English Version." Not all the various parts of the site are translated, but at least you can get the basic history.

The pictures remind me of Jogo du Pau, the 13th century Portugese stick system. I took a class this summer at one of the WMA events. Very fascinating.

Yeah, similar, but Jogo do Pau is likely no early that 18th century...or cannot trace its roots further than that.
