The Japanese Archeological Association said Sunday it would expel Shinichi Fujimura, a 50-year-old archeologist found to have fabricated the discovery of ancient stone artifacts.

The association made the decision at an extraordinary committee meeting held in Tokyo. "The association could not possibly overlook the incidents, which significantly lowered public confidence in archeological studies and damaged the name of the association," the association said.

The association also accepted a resignation letter submitted by Tohoku Paleolithic Institute Director Toshiaki Kamada. Fujimura was senior director of the institute when the scandal was revealed.

Japanese Archeological Association Chairman Ken Amakasu, professor emeritus of Niigata University, apologized at a press conference for not having been able to prevent Fujimura's wrongful acts.

"We need to examine for ourselves whether enough information was disclosed and enough theories were exchanged among researchers with differing opinions concerning the new discoveries," he said. "We also need to try to improve researchers' ethics."
