When I practice jodo on my own I do each side of each kata solo. When I practice uchidachi and Shinto Ryu kenjutsu I use my iaito to better simulate the weight and feel of a sword. When it come time to practice the kata which involve a kodachi I don't have a steel short sword to use, so I decided to get one.

Here's the problem. The wooden kodachi I use for jodo is 22inches long. All the short swords I have found on the market are 27+inches long and all tanto are 16-inches long. I am unable to find a short sword the same length as my wooden kodachi.

Am I using an unusual length of kodachi? What kind of sword is the kodachi in jodo ment to represent? What size kodachi do you use for jodo? Lastly, does anyone know of a place to get a 22inch short sword?

I know Koei (http://www.koei-budogu.co.jp/) and its representatives BoguBag (http://www.bogubag.com/) and EuroBogu (http://www.eurobogu.net/) sell kodachi versions of many of their iaito.

I can have them made for you as well. Not too much more expensive than what you would regularly pay- although not steel. I can have blank ugly steel blades made just for that. E-mail me if you want a quote.
