FOR SALE
BOOK ON JUKENDO (JAPANESE BAYONET FIGHTING)
$15

TITLE: Jukendo kyohon ("Instructional Manual in the Art of the Bayonet") by Takahashi Kao

DESCRIPTION. Jukendo is the art of the bayonet (juken). It is NOT a variety of kendo. First developed by the Japanese military in the 19th century to address the shortcomings of French bayonet fighting techniques, jukendo draws from traditional Japanese spearsmanship (sojutsu), such as the famous Hozoin-ryu. This art is currently practiced as combat training and as a competitive sport, largely by members of the Japanese military, though it also has followers in many countries. Jukendo teaches the bayonet and the associated weapon of the tanken (short sword). This book discusses the philosophy, techniques, principles, and training curriculum of jukendo. It also contains a chapter on the polearm techniques.

Table of Contents
1. On budo
2. Instruction in jukendo
3. The kata of jukendo -- including juken (bayonet) vs. juken, but also tanken (short sword) vs. tanken, tanken vs. juken, and tanken vs. sword.
4. Unusual varieties of budo -- e.g., naginata (glaive), bo (long staff), yari (spear)
5. Appendix (judging jukendo, etc.)

218 pages. Softcover.

ILLUSTRATIONS. Prolifically illustrated. Most pages contained sequential photographs or drawings of techniques.

LANGUAGE: Japanese only. There is no English anywhere.

CONDITION. In excellent condition. No markings anywhere. The pages are crisp, and the binding is tight. I have kept the dust jacket and even the little strip of sales blurb that goes over the cover of some Japanese books. This is as good as a new copy.

LIST PRICE: US-based merchants sell this book for ~$27 + shipping. The list price in Japan is 2,500 yen (and then think about the cost of shipping).

NOTE. This book offers a glimpse into a rare form of Japanese martial art, but does not substitute for live instruction. Those interested in learning jukendo should seek out qualified teachers.

SHIPPING & HANDLING. $3 by Media Mail rate. Will ship by Priority Mail for $6. Continenal US customers only.

PAYMENT. Accept PayPal.
